Following her Broadway debut in 1945, Julie Harris rose to stardom through her roles in The Member of the Wedding, The Lark and other plays, which she later filmed. In 1976 she performed a one-woman show as Emily Dickinson. In 1980 she played the lead in On Golden Pond on the West coast,and in 1992–1993 toured in Lettice & Lovage. She also wrote Julie Harris Talks to Young Actors (1972).
